Dental emergencies can be very scary for kids. They’re scary for you as a parent, as well. You want to be sure that your child’s dentist is providing the best care. Here at Shaenfield Pediatric Dentistry, we’re committed to caring for kids of all ages, including kids with special needs. If something happens to your child’s teeth, come see us!

What’s Considered a Dental Emergency?

How do you know if your child needs emergency dental care? There are several emergencies that we want to deal with right away.

1. Tooth Pain

If your child has been complaining about tooth pain for longer than 1-2 days, it’s time to call our San Antonio office. We’ll take a close look at their teeth and identify what the problem could be. Once we know what’s wrong, we can treat it and relieve the pain.

2. Dental Abscess

Also known as a tooth infection, a dental abscess needs treatment right away. If untreated, the infection can spread and cause serious issues. Infections are also usually very painful.

3. Broken Tooth

If teeth break or chip, they become vulnerable. Not getting care right away can make the damage worse. Oftentimes, there’s also a lot of pain that comes with the break. Broken dental fillings are also considered emergencies.

4. Knocked Out Tooth

When a tooth gets knocked out, it’s easy to panic. Instead of going to the emergency room, contact our office. This dental trauma can occur because of a sports injury, a bad fall, a fight, or a car accident. Often the tooth can be reinserted and saved if you act quickly. Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown, rinse it off, and transport it to the office in a cup or bag of milk.

5. Sedation Dentistry

Depending on the dental emergency, we might recommend sedation dentistry for your child. We offer three levels of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. The type of sedation will be determined by the nature of the emergency and the level of your child’s anxiety. Our doctors are trained to safely administer sedation and our young patients are always carefully monitored during the procedure.
