What Constitutes an Orthodontic Emergency?

Orthodontic emergencies can involve various issues with your braces or aligners that require immediate attention. Common orthodontic emergencies include:

• Broken or Loose Brackets: Brackets can sometimes become loose or detached from the tooth.
• Poking Wires: Wires can shift and start to poke the inside of your mouth, causing discomfort or pain.
• Lost or Broken Aligners: Misplacing or breaking your Invisalign aligners can disrupt your treatment.
• Severe Discomfort or Pain: Persistent pain or discomfort that cannot be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Immediate Steps to Take During an Orthodontic Emergency

If you experience an orthodontic emergency, here are some immediate steps you can take to alleviate discomfort until you can visit our office:

Broken or Loose Brackets

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and avoid handling it. If it completely detaches, save the bracket and bring it with you to your appointment.

Poking Wires

If a wire is poking and causing discomfort, try to gently push it back into place with a clean cotton swab or pencil eraser. If that doesn’t work, place orthodontic wax over the wire to protect the inside of your mouth.

Lost or Broken Aligners

If you lose or break an aligner, switch to the previous set of aligners or move on to the next set if you have them. Contact our office immediately for further instructions.

Severe Discomfort or Pain

Use over-the-counter pain relief medication to manage discomfort and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling if necessary. Contact us as soon as possible to schedule an emergency appointment.
